Ephesians 4:11-16 (NKJV)

11  And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,
12  for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
13  till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
14  that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,
15  but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head–Christ–
16  from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

“For his “body” has been formed in his image and is closely joined together and constantly connected as one. And every member has been given divine gifts to contribute to the growth of all; and as these gifts operate effectively throughout the whole body, we are built up and made perfect in love.”

Ephesians 4:16 TPT

Define Called:

Invitation, invited and appointed – In a sense, as Christians we are all called to Christ, to follow and obey Him. … From the Old Testament to the New, God frequently called people to Himself and to His work.

1. Called out of Darkness
Peter 2:9 (NKJV)

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

2. Called to be Saints
1 Corinthians 1:2 (NKJV)

To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

3. Called into Fellowship with His Son – 1 Corinthians 1:9 (NKJV)

God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

4. Called into the Grace of Christ
Galatians 1:6 (NKJV)

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, Himself Shouts

5. Called in one hope of your calling – Ephesians 4:4 (NKJV)

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;  Called into the Body of Christ…One Church many local churches. We are called by God into a local church where we can function, grow etc.

6. Called Upward
Philippians 3:12-14 (NKJV)

Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.  Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

7. Called to be Partakers of the Heavenly Calling
Hebrews 3:1-4 (NKJV)

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.

8. Called into Ministry
1 Corinthians 1:1 (NKJV)

Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,

Called us with a Holy Calling
2 Timothy 1:8-11 (NKJV)

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

Every Christian is called (invited and appointed)

  • This is a Holy Calling
  • With the Calling you are centered into the purposes of God
  • I guess when you receive an invitation that you are obliged to RSVP
  • You will not be forced to assume you position and purpose but if you are passionate then you will embrace this calling

Every Christian is given a ministry or various ministries

We believe that every single follower of Jesus Christ has at least one spiritual gift. And if every follower of Jesus Christ has a spiritual gift, then each of us has an area of ministry for which God has gifted and designed us. What this means is that God wants every follower of Jesus to use their lives to make a difference for eternity.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NKJV)

4  There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5  There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
6  And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
7  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

 Notice the following:

  1. Diversities of gifts
  2. Difference of ministries
  3. Diversities of activities

Spiritual Gift:

A supernatural endowment of the Holy Spirit whereby every Christian is empowered to perform a certain function which edifies the church and glorifies God. In short, it is the supernatural ability to serve God by a particular activity.

  • Vocal Gifts
  • Revelation Gifts
  • Power Gifts

“Remember, it is the same Holy Spirit who distributes, activates, and operates these different gifts as he chooses for each believer.” – 1 Corinthians 12:11 TPT

Ministry Gifts

Equippers (Eph 4:11)

  • Apostles
  • Prophets
  • Teachers
  • Pastors
  • Evangelists

Motivational Gifts

  • Prophesy
  • Serving
  • Exhortation
  • Giving
  • Leading
  • Mercy
  • Hospitality

Romans 12:3-8 (NKJV)
3  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
4  For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function,
5  so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
6  Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;
7  or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching;
8  he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

1 Peter 4:10-11 (NKJV)
10  As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11  If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

  • Vocal giftslet him speak as the oracles of God
  • Serving gifts let him do it as with the ability which God supplies

Good Stewards vs lazy stewards – Parable of the talents

Definition of Steward : “a person who manages another’s property (gifts, ministries, abilities) or financial affairs.

Fulfill your ministry and Take Heed

  • Defined Fulfill: To carry out fully
  • Define Take Heed: Pay attention

Colossians 4:17 (NKJV)
And say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.”

2 Timothy 4:5 (NKJV)
But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Give yourself entirely to this gift

1 Timothy 4:14-16 (NKJV)
14  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
15  Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.
16  Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

  • Don’t neglect – to be careless of; make light of; neglect, be negligent, not regard.
  • Meditate – to take care of, revolve in the mind, imagine, (pre-) meditate. Let your mind be deeply impressed with these things; make them the subject of profound and serious thought.
  • Give yourself entirely – give self wholly to; completely, utterly.
  • Progress – Are you going forward; that is, are you advancing and making progress. A minister ought to make steady improvement in all that pertains to his position. No man ought to be satisfied with present attainments.

Progress…”in all things.” It should be apparent to all persons who attend on a stated preaching of a minister, that he is making steady advances in knowledge, and wisdom, skills, maturity, and in all things that pertain to the proper performance of the duties of his office. If a man really makes progress, it will be seen and appreciated by others; if he does not, that will be as well understood by his hearers. Guard against stagnation…plateauing…stability and maturity is good but not standing still.

Desire Spiritual Gifts

1 Corinthians 14:1 (NKJV)
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

  • Pursue love (to pursue follow (after), given to, press forward)
  • Desire spiritual gifts (zelos; to have warmth of feeling for covet (earnestly), (have) desire, (be) zealous)

Stir up Spiritual Gifts

2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NKJV)
6  Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7  For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

The original word used here denotes the kindling of a fire, as by bellows. Fan into flame the dying embers!

This is something that you have to do. People can encourage you. Inspire or motivate you in your giftings and ministries but you are the custodian of the fire place of your heart. You have to keep yourself fueled and burning. If the fire goes out you can’t blame someone else, the leaders, the lack of opportunity or the “spiritual climate” …you MUST take personal responsibility.

This speaks about being passionate about serving, making a difference and being involved.

So how do you stir up the gift of God?

  • It starts by saying, “Lord, I want it! I want my life to be what You have called it to be.
  • I do not want to simply blend in with this society and ultimately make no difference.
  • I want the power to stand out as a follower of Jesus Christ.”
  • I am alive in this generation!”
  • Pray in the Spirit, build yourself up in your most holy faith.

Devoted yourself to the ministry

Define Devoted: Consecrated, addicted, determined

1 Corinthians 16:15-18 (NKJV)
15  I urge you, brethren–you know the household of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints–
16  that you also submit to such, and to everyone who works and labors with us.
17  I am glad about the coming of Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus, for what was lacking on your part they supplied.
18  For they refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore, acknowledge such men.

1 Corinthians 16:15 (KJV)
15   I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)

Ministry of reconciliation

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NKJV)
18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,
19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.
