Although this lesson will be more applicable to those who recognize the call of God into full-time ministry, it will nevertheless be helpful to all believers. The greater the calling and anointing upon one’s life, the greater the responsibility required. Every commission to the Church in the New Testament includes the authority to heal the sick: Authority to heal is seen in:

  • The ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 4:18-19; Acts 2:22, 10:38; Hebrews 2:4)
  • The commission of the twelve (Matthew 10:1, 8; Luke 9:1, 2, 6)
  • The commission and ministry of the seventy (Luke 10:1, 9, 17)
  • The commission and ministry of the Church (Mark 16:17-20; John 14:12; 20:21)

Because of this commission, we ought to be prepared to walk in a way that honours the anointing placed upon us.

Some Are Also Called Of God Into Miracle Ministry

  • The Apostles (Acts 5:12)
  • Peter (Acts 3:6, 5:15-16, 9:36-42)
  • Paul (Acts 14:9-10, 19:11-12)
  • Stephen (Acts 6:8)
  • Philip (Acts 8:5-8)
  • We see the miracle ministry in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 12:10,28)

Modern Church history has revealed a number of men and women of God who have been extensively used in miracle ministry. Some of these people are dealt with in more detail in lesson 7, both in their strengths and in their weaknesses.

• John Alexander Dowie (1847-1907): He paid a tremendous price so that today we can lay hands upon the sick. He faced harassment beyond description to minister to the sick. Although he was undoubtedly the vessel God used to pioneer restoration of the healing ministry, he made unwise statements and decisions toward the end of his life. Despite his failures, he made a great contribution through his ministry, and today we are indebted to his pioneering spirit that pushed through the resistance of hell’s fury.

John G. Lake (1870-1935): This man was the product of the ministry of John Alexander Dowie and more so of the Holy Spirit. He was an apostle to Africa where God used him in a wonderful way. Great miracles took place in his ministry both in Africa and then eventually in Spokane,Washington, where he established his healing rooms. It was recorded that hundreds of thousands of miracles took place through his ministry.

• Smith Wigglesworth (1859-1947): Known as the “Apostle of Faith,” he had unprecedented boldness in the Spirit. He was mightily used in signs and wonders, and like John G. Lake, did not fall or discredit the ministry.

William Branham (1909-1965): This man was probably the one most powerfully used in the gifts of healings and working of miracles. He would operate with great accuracy in the revelation gifts. He was unfortunately led into doctrinal error and called himself Elijah the prophet. His life ended suddenly in a tragic accident. His followers have set up their own “sect” and remain loyal to his message.

Kathryn Kuhlman (1907-1976): This woman of faith was greatly used by God in signs, wonders, and miracles. God used her ministry to shake the USA in power, and the result was that multitudes were led to Christ.
