When God created man, Adam and Eve were made in perfection and lived in the abundance of God. There was no sickness or death. If they had not sinned, they could have lived in this state forever. God created man in order to fellowship with him in this constant state of perfection. This state, which we could call “abundant life,” would continue as long as they obeyed God, but disobedience would bring an end to it.

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)

This state of abundance and perfection was lost when Adam broke the commandment of God. The first state of death that man would suffer was “spiritual death,” i.e., separation from the place of intimacy and friendship with God. Nine hundred and thirty years later, Adam would die physically (Genesis 5:5). This spiritual and physical death would then spread to all mankind.

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12)

Until Jesus’ return, the result of the fall will continue to cause humanity:

  • Bondage
  • Poverty
  • Destruction
  • Sickness
  • Disease
  • Sorrow
  • Death

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

There is victory through redemption because of the blood of Jesus, but only to those who believe and receive him as Lord of their lives.

The human body was not designed to operate in unrighteousness but rather in fellowship and peace with God. The result of sin in the human body is the destruction of health, ultimately leading to physical death. There is no natural way of escape for man, even though we diet, rest or exercise. All this is good, but eventually the end of life will come to all. Michael Jackson can sleep in an oxygen tent and have everything sanitized, but eventually his body will die. Our hope and answer is found only in Jesus.
